National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched during the Mahatma Gandhi’s Centenary Year in 1969 involving 40,000 student volunteers in 37 Universities. Today, it has more than 3.26 million student volunteers spread over 251 Universities and 41 (+2) Councils and implemented in 22,800 academic institutions including higher as well as technical education.
History of NSS Unit of the College
The STSN Govt. Degree College, Kadiri is located in Anantapuram Highway Road. The college was established in 1975 and NSS Unit had sanctioned by S.K.University, Anantapuram. From the inception of the college, the NSS Unit played a valuable social and community service. This is the only Rural College for 12 Mandals of Kadiri Division. Kadiri is a Municipality, Mandal headquarters and also the Revenue Divisional Headquarters. The town has derived its name from the famous God of Sri Lakhsmi Narasimha Swamy, where the Lord emerges from a Khadri tree to rescue his devotee Prahlada. Sri Krishna Devaraya made an effort in building temple for Lord Narasimha which is now being visited by people all over the country. As per Census of India 2011, Kadiri is having 90,000 populations. The Primary and Secondary School education is imparted by government, aided and private schools. The medium of instruction followed by different schools are English, Telugu, and Urdu. Most of the villages are backward and the students are not very much aware of Local, National and International issues. We the lectures try to inculcate the Social Service nature among the students under the platform of National Service.

Regular/General Activities Performed
The aim of National Service Scheme is “Development of the Personality of Students through Community Service”. In order to fulfill the objective, the student volunteers and programme officer are engaged in constructive and productive programmes involving students in various awareness programmes such as E-Banking, Cashless Transactions/Digital Payments, Water Harvesting, Water Conservation, Digital Literacy, State and Central Govt.Schemes, Swach Bharath, Ujjwala Yojana, Jal Sakthi Yojana, Jan Dhan Yojana, Pradan Mantri Jeevan Bhima Yojana, Beti-Bachao-Beti Padao, Ek Bharath and Shreesta Bharath, Awareness on Superstitions, Renewable Energy, Mal Nutrition, Mock Parliament, Communication Skills, Leadership Qualities among the Volunteers, All Vardanthis and Jayanthis of National Leaders, Orientation to the NSS Volunteers, NSS Enrollment, Blood Grouping, Shramdaan, (Clean and Green), Plantation, Central and State Government Schemes, Women Empowerment, Social Reforms, Communal Harmony, Creation of Community Assets, Job Opportunities, Life Skill Management, Report Writing, Higher Education, Plastic Free Society, Relief Work, Blood Donation, Disaster Management, Environmental Protection, Painting, Rangavalli, Literacy Programme, Internet Banking, National Integration, Health Education Campaign, All National and International Days, Infant and Child Welfare Awareness, Right to Vote, participated at National/State/District Level Camps, Jal Sakthi Abhiyan Yojana, Swach Sarvekshan, All important Days, Azadi-ka- Amrit- Mahostav, Covid-19 Awareness, Jhan Dhan Yojana, Cashless Transactions, Awareness on Diseases and Epidemics, Vigilance Week, Tribute to Freedom Fighters, etc.
We also conducted Essay Writing/Quiz/ Elocution Competitions regularly on various topics. Under the NSS scheme, many volunteers were completed 240/120 hours of community work during the course of time. To recognize the voluntary service rendered by NSS volunteers, we are providing prizes to the Best volunteers and distributed prizes on the day of NSS Day, Independence Day and Republic Day etc. The programmes were conducted at College; Local Villages of Kadiri Mandal particularly adopted villages. We have invited the experts for giving more awareness on various topics related to NSS and Community services.
Special NSS Camps
The NSS Unit is conducting special camps in every year. Generally, the camp aims and targets are changing based on the local conditions and requirements. The common aims are.,
ü To meet the needs of the communities and supplement the education of college students by bringing them face to face with the community situation.
ü To provide opportunities to NSS Volunteers to play their roles in the implementation of various developmental "programmes, which helps in creating durable community assets in rural areas and improvement of the condition of weaker sections of the communities.
ü Encouraging the students to work with the adults in rural areas, thereby developing their character, social consciousness and commitment, discipline and healthy and helpful attitudes towards the community.
ü To create Leadership qualities among the students and identify the talents.
ü Emphasizing the dignity of labour and self-help and the need for combining physical work with intellectual pursuits etc.
ü Encouraging youth to participate enthusiastically in the process of national development, and promote national integration through democratic living and cooperative action.
The NSS Unit conducted every year Special NSS Camp at Adopted village and contributed services to the village. We identified the community problems and giving awareness on various issues. We take up various developmental activities in one week with the support of local people. As part of camp, we conducted half day work and half day various classes on various topics given by experts. The main works like the construction of Roads, environment enrichment Programmes, conservation, awareness on Health and family welfare, Literacy, Adult Education, Govt. schemes, cleaning of village ponds, drainage canals, closing of the unused bore wells, repair the roads, plantation, removing of wastage in the public places and roads, removing thorny bushes at road sides etc, which is useful for the local community. We con not measure the works done by volunteers, it’s only for service oriented, not by cost. The rallies on various topics are covered and encourage them to participate in the social service activities. We also gave awareness on Environment enrichment programmes, women safety, fire safety measures, Health Awareness, Literacy, Women Empowerment, Local Problems, Clean and Green, Sanitation and Hygiene, National Integration, Social Harmony Programmes for making the Village self-sufficient.
Creation of Assets:As part of Special NSS Camps, the volunteers are involved in various community based service activities; sometimes we cannot calculate the value. The NSS Unit formulated the Village Roads, Repairs of Village Roads, Water Tank and Drainage Clean and Plantation, Cleaning the School Compounds, Removing of wastage, awareness on various issues, Rallies and many, which coasts around 3 to 6 Lakhs rupees worth in every special camp.
National Integration Camps:We always encourages to the NSS Volunteers to participate at National Integration Camps, Trucking Camps and Annual Training Camps. Recently D.Aravind, III BA Student was participated National Integration Camp, which was held at Nizamabad, Telangana. The Department of Youth Services, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh has conducted Annual Training Camp at Kadapa District, 21 Students (twenty one) of the college NSS Volunteers were participated. They also participated in Cultural Programmes and got several prizes.
Workshops:The National Service Scheme also ties up with ‘Youth Red Cross Wing’for conducting several activities like Blood Donation and Blood Grouping etc. Every year we conducted workshop on ‘Disaster Management & First Aid’. This workshop is meant for NSS Students. We had given practical training to the students, which are useful for society. We also distributed the certificates.
Divisional Level Youth Festival:The Department of NSS organized ‘Divisional Level Youth Festival’ by the name “YUVAJANOSTAVALU”every year for identifying the cultural talents among the students and others in the Kadiri division. This programme was sponsored by Department of Youth Services, Anantapuramu, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh. The selected students may participate at District and /State/National Level competitions. Our college students were actively participated and got Prizes and Medals. We also conducted ‘College Youth Festival’and ‘YUVATARANGALU,which was sponsored by Collegiate Education, Higher Education Department, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh. We also send our students to participate at University Youth Festival and other programmes conducted by S.K.University, Anantapuramu.
Unique Feature of the NSS:
The Kadiri is having twelve Mandals and Govt and other Private hospitals are located at Kadiri only. The economically backward people are facing many health problems and there are blood need emergency cases in every time, it’s a continues requirement of blood for Pregnancy Women, Anemia, Road Accidents, Emergency cases and old age people etc. Every day, there are many people came to our college for blood. We identified the NSS Volunteers and send them to the hospital for blood donation; we take some precautionary measures and instructions are given to the volunteers before going. It’s a unique feature of the National Service Scheme of Govt. Degree College, Kadiri.
Preservation of Records:All the NSS Regular and Special Camp activities of News Paper Clippings and Photographs are preserved and original report submitted to the concerned University every year.
